Western Province defeated Southern Cape to edge into third place as Gauteng North strengthened their position at the top of the A-Section log in Wednesday’s third round of the South African U23 Inter-Provincial at Nelspruit Golf Club.

Province and Southern Cape were squared at 2-all after the foursomes, but halves from AB Price and Robert Bougas and victories Marlon Swarts, Josh de Klerk, Ian Snyman and Alex Jordon handed Province a 7-5 victory.

Price halved with Rian Grootboom and Bougas with the Garden Route’s number two, Jovan Rebula, while Swarts beat Xilian Nel 5/4, De Klerk knocked out Jason Koeries 5/4 and Snyman downed Jack Duthie 1-up.

Province earned two crucial points for their effort and edged into fourth place on the log ahead of Southern Cape on one point and Central Gauteng, who bookends the bottom with zero points.

Gauteng North enjoyed their third successive victory when they defeated Central Gauteng 7.5 – 4.5 to move to six points at the top of the log.

The leaders are two points clear of Ekurhuleni, who were held to a 6-all draw by a spirited performance from Limpopo, but the Gauteng East side managed to hang on to their second spot. They lead their third round opponents by one point.

In the B-Section, North West replaced Mpumalanga at the top of the log but the side are just a slender games point ahead of KwaZulu-Natal.

North West beat the hosts 8-4 to take pole on five points, but after KwaZulu-Natal celebrated a brilliant 9.5 – 2.5 victory over Free State & Northern Cape, the coastal side moved into second on five points and trail the log leaders 23-22 in games count.

Mpumalanga dropped to third on four points and remain one point clear of Boland, who moved into fourth with three points after defeating the Eastern Province 7-5.

With two rounds remaining and a promotion on the cards, it certainly looks as if the B-Section could go right down to the wire.
