Modderfontein’s Eric Wowor chipped in for two eagles to finish within striking distance of early pacesetter Ugo Coussaud from France in the first round of the South African Stroke Play Championship at Port Elizabeth Golf Club on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old Central Gauteng player carded an opening five-under-par 67 and briefly held the clubhouse lead before Coussaud came home in 66 strokes to lead the morning field on a sunny day in the windy city.

The South African is currently tied for second with Jeremy Gandon from France and the pair is a one stroke clear of Central Gauteng’s Rupert Kaminski and Eastern Province / Border Stroke Play champion, Ian Snyman from Western Province.

Local favourite Fezekile Kana opened with a three under 69 to join Central Gauteng’s Dylan Naidoo and Luke Trocado from Western Province.
