Albert Venter made a welcome return to the winner’s circle with a two stroke victory in the KwaZulu-Natal Amateur Championship Stroke Play Championship on Thursday.

Coming off an undefeated performance at the recent Fellowship Cup against India, the GolfRSA National Squad player went wire-to-wire at Southbroom Golf Club to claim the top spot in the 32-strong field for the Match Play stage.

Venter offset a bogey start and a further drop at the third with six birdies for an opening four-under-par 68. In the final round, the Gauteng North player dipped seven under par with birdies at two, four and six, but suffered a double bogey at the par-three eighth.

A birdie at the ninth and nine straight pars down the back stretch saw him sign for a two under 70.

Venter edged out local favourite Malcolm Mitchell, Theunie Bezuidenhout from North West and Ekurhuleni’s Ryan van Velzen for the win and will face Matthew Hands from Simbithi Country Club in the first round of the knock out stages.

Mitchell from Kloof, who made his national debut against India at Leopard Creek, shot successive round of 70 and he goes up against Thabiso Magwaza from Umhlali Country Club.
