Varsity College A edged out the University of Pretoria’s B-team for the lead on the opening day of the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Golf Championship.

Tuks B-team golfer Gregg Gilson led the first round of the 36-hole stroke play seeding qualifier at Centurion Country Club on Monday alongside Philip Swanepoel from the University of Stellenbosch on even-par 72.

However, Patric Broughill-Downing from Varsity Collage A clocked in with a 73 to give his team a welcome boost. Jason Broomhead contributed a 74 and Devon Murray added a 78 to lift the side to the top of the team standings on 225.

Gilson’s fine effort, plus a 75 from Brandon Lane and 77 from Adriaan Hamman will see Tuks B start the final round of the qualifier just a shot off the pace.

North West University – denied in 2015 by the University of Pretoria, who racked in their 10th title in the prestigious team championship at Port Shepstone Golf Club – also made a solid start to this year’s event.

SJ Boshoff shot 74, Eben-Paul Zietsmann returned a 75 and SJ Allen contributed a 78 to put the team within striking distance at 227.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University A got their title defence off underway with a 229 and finished just four shots behind the leaders alongside Tuks A.

Former Western Province standout Altin van der Merwe returned a 75, while Kyle de Beer and Jacques Smith carded a pair of 77s.

Calvin Ferreira led the way for Tuks A with a 73, David Nortje posted 77 and Ian Jacobs supplemented the team’s total with a 79.
