Union Teams looking strong in SA Challenge Cup

09 May 2011

Victor Lange, seen here after having won the SA U19 Amateur, had a tough day playing for Central Gauteng. He teamed up with Pienaar to beat the SA Juniors in the Foursomes. Then he had to fend off talented Zander Lombard to halve his singles match.

The three Union teams got off to good starts in the South African Challenge Cup’s first round played at the Metropolitan Golf Club in Cape Town on Monday.

Gauteng North sorted out the students, a team selected from the Universities in the country, 9 points to 3. Hosts Western Province did nearly as good a job on their opponents, the President’s Team, beating them 8.5 points to 3.5. Central Guateng were made to sweat just a little more than the other Unions, emerging victorious, 7.5 points to the team of South African Juniors’ 4.5

Tomorrow is likely to be a bit more of the same with the Unions all taking on another non Union team. Central Gauteng taken on the students while Gauteng North are up against the President’s Team. Juniors taking on hosts Western Province.

The tournament concludes on Friday.
