Snyders, Chuang celebrate Junior Series victories

Paarl Boys High scholar Tyran Snyders is one step closer to a possible start in a prestigious junior championship in the United States next year after he clinched a one shot victory in the second Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series, while Western Province junior Caden Chuang collected his second straight victory in the Under-13 A-Division on Sunday.

Snyders fired a two-under-par 70 at Paarl Golf Club to edge out fellow Boland junior LB Boshoff by one stroke for the A-Division title in the Under-19 category.

“It’s a lot tougher to win an 18-hole event than a championship over 36 or 54 holes, because there is no room for error, so I didn’t think about the result at all,” said the delighted 16-year-old. “My only goals for the day were to try to limit my mistakes and to take things shot-for-shot.”

The Paarl junior took pole position with a trio of birdies from the par four eighth.

“I missed some birdie chances over the first couple holes,” he said. “I shaved the edge at the first, pitched it close at the second, but the ball spun back and I missed short putts at three and six. I just told myself to stay patient, because I was hitting it close and they had to start dropping.”

And drop they did when Snyders knocked in a short birdie putt at the eighth.

“I hit a nice fade off the tee and a lob-wedge to the back of the green that spun back to a foot,” he said. “I holed the putt to go one under and that sparked a nice run. At the ninth, I hit driver into the rough, laid up with a three-iron, chipped it to 20 foot and made the birdie putt.

“I smashed a drive down the 10th and hit a four-iron to 20 feet. The eagle putt turned away at the hole, but I tapped in for birdie. “I was still three under when I reached the final hole. I hit a good drive down the middle, but I duffed my second and finished short of the green. I chipped it to the front of the green and had 40 feet left to the hole for birdie. I lagged the first putt to five feet, but my par-putt horseshoed out and I had to clean up for a bogey finish.

“I only learned that LB was right on my heels after I'd won, but he finished bogey-bogey. Not knowing what the other guys were doing definitely helped me to stay in the moment to get the win.”

Snyders and Deon Geldenhuys, who won the inaugural event, as well as all the winners in the A-Division will compete for two coveted spots into the 40th North and South Junior Championship at the infamous Pinehurst Resort the USA in July 2018 when the 18-event national Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series wraps up in March next year.

“This is a huge incentive to play for, because usually we are only playing for ranking points or to make our Junior SA Inter-Provincial teams,” Snyders said. “I am really pleased that I have qualified already and I’m into the North or South Regional Finals for next year. I’ll have at least seven more months to improve to give myself a fighting chance to get to the USA.”

Meanwhile Chuang is two-for-two in the new series aimed at nurturing South Africa’s promising young talent.

The 11-year-old from Royal Cape edged out Jamie Rickets from Durbanville Golf Club to win the first event at his home course in July and on Sunday, Chuang carded a 79 to beat Ricketts and Conrad Loubser from Theewaterskloof by two shots for his second victory.
