Central Gauteng launches their title defence in the 29th SA Senior Amateur Inter-Provincial at the Simola Golf and Country Estate near Knysna today.

Central Gauteng dominated with 11 victories between 2002 and 2013 and – after narrow losses in 2014 and 2015 – the defending champions ended Western Province’s reign in the prestigious national senior team championship with a champions’ innings on the final day at Kyalami Golf Club 12 months ago.

Rurik Gobel and Greg Gleeson will lead Central Gauteng into the first round foursomes against KwaZulu-Natal, who last enjoyed a podium finish eight years ago.

Western Province ruled the roost with four victories in the five years and will be keen to get back in the winner’s circle after missing out on a hat-trick last year.

Dave Johnstone and Henry Trevena will start the Western Province onslaught against Johan Marais and Lional Davids from Southern Cape and North West duo Quintin van der Poel and Bennie Kleynhans in the opening Foursomes match.

It’s also been 15 years since Gauteng North defeated Central Gauteng to lift the coveted SA Senior Amateur Inter-Provincial trophy.

Williams Skinner and Phillip Bierman will open the batting for the Daisies against Rodney Smith and Grant Gardiner from Ekurhuleni and Eric du Toit and Daniel Nyathela from Mpumalanga, who returned to the A-Division after a mighty push in the battle for promotion at Killarney Country Club last year.

Border and Eastern Province will face off in the first round matches down the road at Pezula Golf Estate, while Free State starts their battle for promotion against Northern Cape.

Norman Philips and South Africa Golf Hall of Famer Denis Jones will open for Border against Karl du Preez and Greg de Doncker from Eastern Province in the opening Foursomes, while Callie Wiesner and Francois Bezuidenhout will lead Free State into battle against Johan Bezuidenhout and Keith Brown from Northern Cape.
