SA take Zone VI in dominant fashion

25 Apr 2008

Jacques BlaauwIt was not a clean sweep but nonetheless a dominating performance by the South Africans today, winning six of their eight matches, halving one and losing another in the final round of the Zone VI played at Ndola Golf Club, Zambia.

South Africa won the event with a total of 22.5 points, out of a possible 24, 8 points clear of their nearest rivals Zimbabwe.

Playing in dry and blustery conditions 18 year old Dean O'Riley halved his match with Arthur Horne from Swaziland. He must be cursing himself, playing the 17th and penultimate hole, he was two up on Horne. The Benoni Lake Golf Club member three putted to lose the hole. Horne proceeded to birdie and win the 18th, the game ending all square.

The current SA Boys Champion and number 2 ranked player on the SAGA Player Rankings, Dylan Frittelli struggled throughout his round eventually losing to Kenyan John Njugna 2 and 1. Even though he was the only South African to lose a match, Frittelli did have something to smile about, he eagled the par 4 15th, a short par four. He hit his drive to just short of two metres and sunk his putt.

All the other South Africans recorded wins.

"I was really delighted in the team's performance," said Enver Hassen, Vice President of the South African Golf Association (SAGA) and team manager. Speaking from Ndola he said a great spirit prevailed in the team during the entire competition which was led in exemplary fashion by 28 year old Johan du Buisson.
