SA Quartet aim for success in Botswana

28 May 2014

Top SA junior golfers Kyle McClatchie, Hennie du Plessis, Eleonora Galletti and Shawnelle de Lange got South Africa’s challenge underway at the second African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana on Tuesday.

The best scores from the Boys Division and Girls Division determine the team’s score and the South Africans got off to a superb start to secure a share of the first round lead with Nigeria on one-over-par 145 at the Gaborone Golf Club.

BOYS DIVISION

McClatchie from Ekurhuleni set the early target with an opening six-under-par 66 which remained unchallenged.

Nigeria’s Tokunbo Pedro produced a 69 to take second, while Limpopo’s Du Plessis tied for third with Stuart Krog from Zimbabwe at one under 71.

Adel Balala from Kenya carded a 75 to finish in fifth, one shot ahead of his team mate, Tahir Said.

GIRLS DIVISION

Kenya’s Naomi Wafula signed for a one-over-par 73 to top the Girls Division leaderboard and has a two stroke lead over Caro and Jessica Dreesneimieke from Namibia.

Nigeria’s Anita Uwadia moved into fourth on 76, while Gauteng’s Galletti finished six shots off the pace after an opening 79.

De Lange from Gauteng carded an 83 to take seventh in the Girls Division.

The Africa Youth Games drew around 2,500 athletes from 54 nations who are competing across 21 sports including athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, fencing, football, golf, judo, karate, netball, rowing, rugby, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball and weightlifting.

South Africa already bagged gold in the rugby competition and claimed 26 medals, including 13 gold medals, in the pool and the South African Junior quartet are hoping to add their names to country’s growing winners list.
