South Africa will face host nation France in the final round of the International Team Mid-Amateur Championship after day of mixed fortunes at Golf Du Medoc Resort near Bordeaux on Saturday.
Josef Fourie, Graeme Watson, Greg Sheard and David Muller scored a runaway victory against Italy in the morning, but narrowly lost to Sweden in the afternoon match.
The team enjoyed a fast start against their Italian opponents to go three up in two games and four up in another at the turn. Sheard and Muller won 6&4, while Fourie and Sheard scored respective victories of 6&4 and 6&5 in the Singles.
Boosted by the solid performance, the South Africans held up well against Sweden through the turn.
Fourie protected a two shot lead through 14 and won his game 2-up, but Sheard, who was all square through 14, lost 2&1 after his opponent finished par-par-birdie.
In the Foursomes, Watson and Muller was 2-up with three holes to play, but lost the game when their opponents knocked in a 15-footer for birdie at the 18th hole.
“Our players gave a great account of themselves, but the Swedes managed to snatch victory in the dying stages of the games,” said team manager and SAGA Assistant Executive Director, Neil Homann.
“The win against Italy was great for the team spirit and the match against Sweden was very tight. The guys are looking forward to our bronze medal battle with France on Sunday.”
The host nation lost to Sweden at the Chateaux Course and will face Italy in the final.
