South African pair Matt Saulez and Malcolm Mitchell has some catching up to do after a slow start to the Copa Juan Carlos Tailhade in Argentina on Thursday.

Saulez carded two-over-par 73 and Mitchell posted 74 in the first round at the Los Lagartos Country Club. The pair finished joint 22nd and 42nd respectively.

Saulez cancelled a bogey start with a birdie at the second, but was only able to offset one of three bogeys on the back nine with a birdie at the par five 15th.

Fellow KwaZulu-Natal golfer Mitchell birdied the par-three seventh and turned one under, but the Kloof golfer gave shots back to the field at 13, 14, 16 and 18.

Marcos Montenegro gave the home crowd something to cheer about when he fired the low round of the first day – a three under 69 – to lead in the Individual Competition, but it was Brazil who topped the leaderboard in the 22nd edition of the Team Competition.

A 69 from Daniel Ishi and 70 from partner Hérik Machado for a total of three-under-par 139 moved Brazil two shots clear of Argentina. Canada moved to third on even-par 142, Spain finished in fourth on 145 and South African team took in fifth place on 145.
