Four of country’s rising juniors will fly the flag for South Africa against a host of foreign nations in the Enjoy Jakarta World Junior Golf Championship in Indonesia this week.

The prestigious international showpiece, which tees off at Damai Inda Golf in North Jakarta on Tuesday, annually attracts the cream of the world’s young golfing talent.

Recent Nomads SA Girl’s Rose Bowl Championship winner Chiara Contomathios and Woo-Ju Son, who claimed the Womens Championship title in the World Amateur Golf Audi Reunion on Reunion Island in April, will compete in the Girls Division.

Steven le Roux from Bloemfontein and Franklin Manchest will represent South Africa in the Boys Division. Le Roux and Manchest, who is enrolled at the KeNako Academy in George, are among the leading lights in the South African Golf Development Board (SADGB) programme.

“The ninth edition of the Enjoy Jakarta World Junior Golf Championship has drawn a full field of 142 juniors from 20 countries,” said Womens Golf South Africa (WGSA) vice-president, Sally Greasley, who accompanied the South African minors.

“Since the tournament coincides with Jakarta’s 488th birthday celebrations, all the youngsters were treated to a fantastic fireworks display and then watched as 88 fish were released into the lake this afternoon.

“All four players had their first look at the Pantai Indah Kapuk course today. They completed a practice round, but since the girls only play a 54-hole championship, they will have another practice session on Tuesday, while the boys’ competition gets underway.”

Manchest will be paired with Australian Charles Pilon and Daniel Wirawan from Indonesia, while Le Roux will line up alongside Hayden Clarke from Australia and local player Aqil Widyntoro. Both players will compete in the A-Division and play off one handicaps.

During their practice round, the players were filmed and interviewed by a Fox TV crew from the United Kingdom.

“It was a very good media training exercise for all of them,” Greasley said.

“The crew asked the players about their practice routines, how they prepare for tournaments and how they fit their golf around a busy school schedule. They will also follow the girls around during their practice session on Tuesday.”
