South Africa’s Tristen Strydom and Paul Boshoff both inched closer to the leaders in the second round of the 51st Junior Orange Bowl International Golf in Coral Gables, Florida on Sunday.

The pair are tied for 24th at the 36-hole mark at the Biltmore Golf Club and lag just six shots off the pace from joint overnight leader Giovanni Tadiotto from Belgium, who overcame a rocky start to card a 69 for a two shot lead.

Successive rounds of 73 at the par-71 Donald Ross-design left reigning Nomads SA Boys U-19 Stroke Play champion Strydom at four-over-par 146.

Meanwhile Boshoff rose 13 spots to join his Ekurhuleni stable mate at after firing a one under 71.

In the Girls Division, overnight leader Sweden’s Linnea Strom signed for a 73 to share the halfway lead with Colombia’s Maria Hoyos at two under 140.

Strydom picked up three birdies on the front nine to offset two drops, but a bogey at the 10th took him back to level par.

Another drop at the par-three 12th and a double at the 17th dropped the 17-year-old to three over, but the current SA number two ranked amateur rallied with a birdie at the par-five 18th to finish the loop in 39 strokes.

Reigning Nomads SA Boys U-19 Match Play champion Boshoff had a pair of birdies on each nine to counter bogeys at the third, 11th and 15th.

“Paul hit 15 out of 18 greens and Tristen about the same, but both players are struggling to come to terms with the grain and the subtle breaks of the Bermuda grass greens,” said Boshoff’s father, Louis.

“They are both excited that they were able to move in the right direction and they are positive that they can continue to improve.”
