Province duo a happy act at Magaliespark

22 Oct 2014

South African Golf Association golf manager, David Younge, congratulated Keith Roman, who recorded a hole-in-one at the fifth in the first round of the 2014 Indwe Risk Services South African Senior Amateur Stroke Play Championship B-Section at Magaliespar

Llewellyn Hardenberg and Keith Roman had extra reasons to smile after both Western Province players holed out at par-threes in the first round of the B-Division competition at the Indwe Risk Services South African Senior Amateur Stroke Play Championship on Wednesday.

Hardenberg tied for sixth on 36 points after collecting four points for a career first ace at the 14th at Magaliespark Country Club.

“I hit a pitching wedge from 115 meters,” explained the delighted 11-handicapper from Parow Golf Club. “The ball pitched on the embankment on the left of the green, rolled down and kept going until it disappeared into the hole.”

Roman recorded his second hole-in-one, also worth four points, at the fifth and finished in a tie for 20th on 31 points.

“I had 160 meters to the pin, so I hit a five-iron in,” said the nine-handicapper from Cape Peninsula. “The ball took one bounce, hit the pin and dropped in the hole. I got my first ace at Peal Valley in 2003, so it’s been a while. Lucky me, because I needed some luck.

“This is such a tricky course and accuracy is key around here. In certain places, the ball just rolls, so you need all your savvy to stay out of trouble.”

Ronnie Maritz leads the B-Division in prestigious senior national event with 40 points.
