Southern Cape’s Christo Lamprecht took a one shot lead at the 36-hole mark of the Nomads Order of Merit North and South Championship on Wednesday.

The 15-year-old member of the Louis Oosthuizen 57 Academy player used his skills at the wind plagued Kimberley Golf Club to take pole position at two-under-par 142.

Lamprecht navigated his way around the 72-hole championship layout with four birdies and an eagle at the par five 12th for an opening 69 and added a 73 in round two to protect his lead.

Bradley de Beer from Fancourt posted rounds of 73 and 70 to finish one off the pace, while Franklin Manchest from George Golf Club put himself in a challenging position to claim his second junior title this season.

The KeNako Academy player lurks at even-par 144 after rounds of 71 and 73.

Wilco Nienaber from Free finished in fourth on one over 145 with rounds of 73 and 72, one shot clear of Kyle de Beer from Port Elizabeth Golf Club, who opened with a 77 but surged to fifth on two over with a second round 70.

“The wind showed up pretty early on and the local pro even said he would be surprised if any player broke par,” said South African Golf Association golf manager David Younge.

“The coastal players took advantage of the two-club wind to put their skills on show. Not surprisingly they dominated the leaderboard after two rounds and Wilco was the only inland player to break into the top five.

“With more wind forecast for Thursday, things could get very interesting. Wilco and Franklin are both NOom event winners at the coast and could definitely pose a threat for Christo, who is hunting a maiden national breakthrough.”
