Mpumalanga closed in on A-Section victory with another thundering victory in the fourth round of the SA Country Districts, while Free State and KwaZulu-Natal will face off in an epic battle for promotion at ERPM Golf Club on Friday.

Mpumalanga handed Border an 8.5 – 3.5 drubbing for their third victory this week and cemented their position at the summit of the standings with six points.

The log leaders hold a two point lead over Boland and will watch the final round clashes with interest as they enjoy a bye on Friday.

Boland emerged victorious from a tough fourth round battle against Ekurhuleni after narrowly defeating the host union 6.5 – 5.5.

The defending champions are second in the standings with four points, but lead by a lone point from Ekurhuleni and North West, who had a bye.

Boland is the only team able to derail Mpumalanga’s title bid, but the defending champions lag 7.5 games points behind Mpumalanga. A victory will tie the two teams, however Boland will have to pull out all the stops against North West to gain enough game points to notch their second successive victory.

Border, lagging in fifth place, and Ekurhuleni will face off to avoid relegation.

The top order of the B-Section standings remained unchanged as log leaders KwaZulu-Natal and second placed Free State both cruised to identical results in the fourth round.

KwaZulu-Natal defeated Eastern Province 8.5 – 3.5 while Free State whipped Southern Cape by the same margin. Both teams have eight points, but KwaZulu-Natal still has a 1.5 games point lead with 31.5 games points.

Northern Cape defeated Limpopo 7.5 – 4.5 for their first victory in the tournament and moved to fourth in the standings behind Southern Cape.
