The great Bobby Locke called Humewood the finest golf course in South Africa and the country’s famous true Links is where the battle for glory in the Indwe Risk Services SA Senior Amateur Stroke Play Championship will play out this week.

As a four-time Open Championship winner, one could argue that it makes South Africa’s first Major champion a bit of an expert on the subject of Links courses.

The late Locke compared Humewood to the best amongst the British Isle links courses and even said that Humewood would be the course of choice should the British Open ever be hosted outside of Britain.

Designed by Colonel SV Hotchkin, who also had a hand in the layouts at Durban Country Club, East London Golf Club, Port Alfred Golf Club and Mowbray Golf Club , Humewood consistently appears among the top 10 ranked courses in South Africa.

The course offers fabulous views right across the shimmering bay and has the full set of first class facilities any golfer could hope for.

The layout boasts the wide and undulating fairways and fast greens, thick coastal bush that are unforgiving to the wayward stroke, deep bunkers that typify a genuine seaside links and the frequent lashings by the winds off Algoa Bay makes it a great test of golf.

Often described as one the most challenging courses in the country, Humewood wears the badge with pride.

It has hosted the South African Amateur 10 times and the South African Open five times and will undoubtedly present a very stern challenge for the country’s seniors this week.

The Indwe Risk Services SA Senior Amateur Stroke Play Championship will be contested from 20-23 October and South Africa’s top ranked Mellette Hendrikse is the defending champion.
