Frittelli and Claassen just off the pace in Canada

01 Aug 2009

Dylan Frittelli, two shots off the paceBoth Dylan Frittelli and JG Claassen are well placed to challenge for the title in today's final round of the 72 hole stroke play Barrett Amateur Championship, being played at Algonquin Golf Course, St Andrews by-the-sea, New Brunswick, Canada.

Despite JG Claassen relinquishing his overnight lead, after recording a one over par 73 for his third round, giving him a 54 hole total of 210, three shots off the pace, he is still well placed to challenge for the title.

Better placed, and also in with a shout in today's final round, is 19 year old Dylan Frittelli, the Gauteng North amateur who is currently a freshman at the University of Texas. The defending champion recorded a level par 71 giving him a 54 hole total of 209, four under par.

Frittelli is two shots off the pace set by Australian Jordan Sherratt. Sherratt recorded the best round of the day, 69, two under par, to edge two shots clear of the field with an aggregate of 207, six under par.

Two other South Africans in the field are Leon Knoll (74) and Jake Redman (71). Knoll is tied in 7th place on 214, one over par, and Redman one shot further back.

Both Knoll and Claassen, who played the first round using borrowed equipment from the local Titleist representative, did eventually get their golf bags and clothing, that were lost in transit between South Africa and Canada, on Thursday (after the first round).

The winner of this championship gains an exemption into the Canadian Amateur Championship which is being played the following week.
