Free State earned the coveted promotion in the 57th South African Inter-Provincial, sponsored by Tempest, after emerging unbeaten in an epic B-Section battle for supremacy at Bryanston Country Club.

The 2017 winners carried a two point edge into the final round on Friday, but it was still too close to call with North West and Eastern Province breathing down their necks.

Having drawn the foursomes against North West, the Free State team threw everything into the singles and came out of the skirmish with a 6.5 – 5.5 result.

“We beat Boland in the third round, and that was really the turning point for us,” said manager Charles Liversage. “That match was incredibly tight and perched on a knife’s edge, but the guys pulled it through with 7.5 points and that really boosted our chances.

“We knew the final match against North West would be a humdinger and we were ready. After the foursomes, the players knew what they had to do to bring it home. Throughout the championship the team left nothing out there and the final round was no different.”

Juran Dreyer drew first blood when he beat Christiaan Burke 4 & 3.

Therion Nel put the next point on the board with a 3 & 2 victory over North West number one Theunie Bezuidenhout and reigning SA Mid-Amateur champion Almero Theron downed Andre van Dyk 3 & 1 to take them to five points.

Ivan van der Merwe scored their sixth point with a 2 & 1 win over Douglas Mc Cabe.

“With six points in the bag, it was down to Richard Maree to get us to the finish line and he halved his game against Wade Jacobs to get us the win,” said Liversage.

“The B-Section is incredibly competitive with everyone chasing that spot in the A-Section and every game counts. I am incredibly proud of the way this team announced themselves in the opening round, beating Mpumalanga and Eastern Province to set the tone for the week.

“They showed a lot of character and heart in all their matches, right down to the final battle against North West. I would like to congratulate Therion Nel, who finished the week with 11.5 points at number one and Attie van Wyk, who lost his only game in the final round. But it’s a team that wins IPT’s and this team pulled together like champions. I couldn’t be more proud. It was an honour to look after this team and we look forward to our first game in the A-Section next year.

“Finally, I would like to congratulate all the teams in the B-Section for their fantastic sportsmanship, their impeccable conduct and the heart every player showed in making this year’s championship such a feast of fantastic contests.”
