Herman Loubser from the United Kingdom was the surprise leader after Sunday’s first round of the Nomads SA Boys U-15 Championship at the Fish River Sun Country Club.

Mount Murray’s Loubser dropped a shot on each nine of the testy Gary Player design, but the Ilse of Man golfer erased the damaged with a birdie at the fourth and a pair of birdies at the 11th and 12th to top the leaderboard at one-under-par 71.

The 14-year-old former US Kids Golf European Championship winner finished two shots clear of the Western Province’s Hilmi Mallick and three ahead of KwaZulu-Natal’s Luke Mayo.

Luca Filippi from the Western Province will start the second round four off the pace after an opening 75, while Southern Cape’s Alex van Wyk and Keegan McLachlan from Gauteng North tied for fifth on 76.
