Former professional CJ Head claimed the Men’s Overall and A-Division title in his debut in 2014 Sanlam Cancer Challenge National Final at Sun City in October.

Head opened with 36 points at the Lost City Golf Club and added 39 in the final round at the Gary Player Country Club to triumph on 75 points.

He finished one point ahead of Charl Stotter from Indwe Golf Club, who posted rounds of 34 and 40 to take second in the Overall and A-Division.

Head, who plays off a four handicap, came into this event having recently caddied for Sunshine Tour professional Dean O’Riley in the BMG Classic at Glendower Golf Club.

“This event is really close to me because my grandfather passed away from cancer,” said the 42-year-old from Benoni Country Club.

“My mother is currently suffering with cancer, so I’ll always support the Sanlam Cancer Challenge.”

Koro Creek Golf Estate’s Sean Verdon won the B-Division on 71 points after rounds of 36 and 35, while Arnold Henning came up trumps in the C-Division.

The Hartswater amateur posted rounds of 33 and 38 for a total of 71 points and finished seven points clear of second-placed Barry Heathcote.

A total of 100 golfers from around South Africa took part in the National Final.

It was the culmination of a series that began in March with club competitions at 438 golf clubs and contested by over 35 000 golfers, and then regional competitions to determine the golfers who qualified for the National Final.

This is the 22nd anniversary of a series that annually raises money for the Cancer Association of South African (CANSA), and which this year raised a record R3,307,990.
