Boland, Gauteng North under pressure at SA IPT

19 Sep 2012

Gerlou Roux rolled in a crucial birdie at the 18th to give Western Province the half they needed to square their foursomes clash against Gauteng North in round three of the South African Inter-Provincial

The third round morning foursomes of the South African Interprovincial at Port Elizabeth Golf Club have left Boland and Limpopo lagging, while the Western Province gave Gauteng North a wake-up call.

Limpopo are three down to KwaZulu-Natal going into the singles, while defending champions Central Gauteng are 2½ - 1½ up on Boland and looking good to score their third successive win.

Western Province’s Gerlou Roux rolled in a crucial birdie at the 18th to give his side the half they needed to square their foursomes clash against Gauteng North.

With a win and a half after two rounds, the former professional said the team needs to bring their A-game in the singles to secure the win and keep their title hopes alive.

“Gauteng North were the runners-up last year, so we know they are a tough side to beat,” said Roux.

“They are a young side, but they showed us this morning that they have a lot of depth and it will take some fine match play to ensure that we come out on top in the singles.

“We are very determined and we showed that by forcing two matches to all square. Now we just need the wind to keep blowing so we can play to our strength and finish this round on a positive note.”

Meanwhile KwaZulu-Natal build up a nice 3-1 lead over Limpopo, but captain Gavin Sole warned that the coastal side will have to convert the advantage to a win to stay in the hunt.

“It’s nice to have this cushion, but with a loss and a win we need success today or our run is over,” he said. “I have confidence in the guys and they know we are under the gun here. Each guy knows what he has to do this afternoon.”

After four successive wins in the first two rounds, Southern Cape strengthened their bid for promotion by taking a 3½ - ½ lead over Mpumalanga.

Free State & Northern Cape will take a comprehensive 4-0 lead over Border into the singles, but they have some work to do against Ekurhuleni after both teams scored two points in the foursomes. The Gauteng East side leads Border 3-1.
