Boland and Free State have it all to play for on Friday

12 May 2011

Devonvale Golf & Wine Estate the venue for this year's South African Country Districts Inter Provincial

The script for the fifth and final round could not have been created in a more dramatic and unexpected fashion than it was in the fourth round of the South African Country Districts Inter Provincial Tournament played at Devonvale Golf and Wine Estate near Stellenbosch.

Two log leaders in the A Division went head to head in what turned out to be a nail biting affair. Free State and Northern Cape took the upper hand in the morning foursomes winning 2.5 points to Boland’s 1.5. The defending champions, Free State, continued their winning ways in the afternoon singles taking the first two points. However Boland fought back gallantly taking 4.5 points from the last six singles matches.

The result was that the match ended in a half, 6 points each and one point each on the Divisional Log. With both teams now on 5 points, and Free State and Northern Cape having a slender advantage of having won one more game than the host Union. Friday both teams have everything to play for, it appears the 13th May will be lucky for only one of them.

Looking at Friday’s draw the home Union appear now to hold all the cards. They take on Eastern Province, a team that has not fared at all well up to now. The probability of Boland winning strongly could be what spoils Free States final round.

The defending champions take on Kwazulu Natal, who are currently in third place on the log, a far more difficult task.

In the B Division there are three teams, after Thursdays fourth round, on six points. They are North West, Ekurhuleni and Limpopo.

North West recorded a devastating win over Limpopo in Thursday’s fourth round, 10.5 point to 1.5. Ekurhuleni beat Southern Cape 8.5 to 3.5 while Karoo beat Border 9 points to 3.

Friday’s final round North West play Ekurhuleni. It is hard to determine which of these two evenly matched teams will emerge victorious on Friday. However what is pretty certain whoever does will win the B Division and gain promotion to the A for next year’s tournament.

Limpopo have a relatively easier match against Karoo however they have only won 22.5 matches, seven less than Ekurhuleni and eight and a half less than North West. This maybe too much to make up.
