South Africa’s first Olympian golfer Kyle McClatchie beat the nerves with an impressive show of composure to lead the nine-strong amateur delegation on day one of the BMW SA Open hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni.
The 19-year-old from Ekurhuleni crafted a magnificent one-under-par 71 at the championship layout of Glendower Golf Club on Thursday to grab a share of 43rd.

South Africans Keith Horne and Trevor Fisher Jnr managed to upstage Rory McIlroy on Thursday in the opening round of the BMW SA Open proudly hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni at Glendower Golf Club – but only just.
The duo each carded six-under-par 66 to have a one-stroke edge over the world number two, with four other players on five-under-par 67 with McIlroy – South Africans Thomas Aiken, Dean Burmester and Jbe’ Kruger, and England’s Jordan L Smith.

“Mellette was extremely well known and respected, both as a player and golf administrator, and we were incredibly saddened to learn that he passed away after suffering a heart attack on Wednesday afternoon,” said South African Golf Association acting president Geoff Taylor.

Shaun Stapleton put the finishing touches on his prep for the upcoming SA Mid-Amateur Test against India with a superb one shot victory in the inaugural Bobby Locke Open at Parkview Golf Club.
The Wanderers golfer opened with a 70 in the weather-hit first round on Monday and carded a 69 in the second round to pull within two shots of the 36-hole leader Garrick Higgo.
On Wednesday morning, Stapleton overhauled the rising star from Boland with another 70 in the third round and he followed with an even-par 72 in the afternoon to secure victory at seven under 281.
