Western Province Senior Open

06 Mar 2012

To-day’s final round of the Western Province Senior Amateur Open played at Steenberg Golf Club saw a ding-dong struggle at the top of the leader-board. The conditions were ideal with barely any wind to talk about. After 27 holes Jannie Strydom (Durbanville) and Jan Vorster (Paarl) were tied on 1 over par after both players carded 35’s for the 1st nine. At that stage Dave Jessup (ERPM) was the closest challenger on 3 over par after recording a 37 for the 1st nine.  Unfortunately the start of the final nine was somewhat disastrous for Jannie with a triple bogey 7 at the 10th. Jannie fought back courageously, playing the next 8 holes in level par. In the meantime Dave Jessup and Jan Vorster were tied after the completion of the 11th hole, after Jan Vorster also had a somewhat indifferent start to the final nine. This situation was short-lived with Jan eventually powering away towards the end. Jan Vorster was crowned champion after a final round of 72 to finish on 146. In joint 2nd place was Tony Bailey (78 & 70) and Jannie Strydom (74 & 74) on 148. A three way tie on 150 saw Brian Mampies (80 & 70), Denis Jones (80 & 70) and Dave Jessup (74 & 76) grouped together.

A number of excellent rounds were recorded to-day with three players finishing on 70, namely Tony Bailey, Denis Jones and Brian Mampies.

Last year’s winner Francois Le oux finished in joint 23rd spot after rounds of 79 & 77, whilst the recent winner of the Boland Senior Amateur Open, Jock Wellington, finished in joint 36th spot on 158 (81 & 77).

The B division (handicaps 10 & upwards) tournament was held concurrently at Westlake Golf Club over 36 holes with the winner being Brendan Malley, scoring a total of 75 individual stableford points (38 & 37). Brendan was closely followed on 72 by Graham Bradshaw (Rondebosch). As a result of the main event being totally over-subscribed an additional event for A division players was also played at Westlake with Strand’s Andre Coutinho being victorious on a score of 163 (82 & 81).

Sunday sees the start of the Cape Winelands Senior Amateur Open with the defending champion Dave Jessup going all out to repeat last year’s great effort.
