INDWE SA Senior Amateur Open Strokeplay Championship

17 Aug 2012

The 2012 INDWE S.A. Senior Amateur Open Strokeplay Championship takes place from the 24th through to the 26th October at two great courses, namely Wingate Park Country Club and Woodhill Country Club, both venues situated in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria.

WingatePark Country Club offers a facility steeped in history, named after the late Major General Orde Wingate who, during World War 11, played an important part in the events in Palestine. Although the official opening of the club took place in 1947, the 18-hole golf course opened in 1952. The grounds are blessed with old trees, flowering shrubs and a variety of birdlife. The championship Wingate Park coursehosted the 1993 South African Masters when Tony Johnstone took the honours, and is a regular venue for provincial amateur events.
The signature hole is the389-metre par-four 11th - an excellent driving hole, mainly because a huge blue gum tree on the right makes it inadvisable to be on that side of the fairway.

Woodhill Country Club was built on undulating grassveld that was a dairy farm. The front nine circles over higher ground and the back nine plays on flatter ground but with more water coming into play. The course hosted the Telkom PGA tournament for five years, from 2001 to 2005.

Stunning scenery and dramatic natural features are evident in this 18-hole parkland championship course. Woodhill challenges all aspects of a golfer's game, yet at the same time provides a distinctly different and enjoyable golfing experience.

The signature hole, the 12th is breathtaking 179 m par-3 with a 608 square meter green.

Laid out alongside and through the Woodhill Residential Estate, this well-presented, Peter Matkovich design is full of excellent and testing golf holes, as well as some wonderful views from its higher elevations. The anti-clockwise front-nine loop and (mainly) clockwise back-nine loop take you on an expansive journey through the estate, with plenty of undulation and some dramatic holes to be played along the way.  Woodhill is certainly one of the best layouts around Pretoria.

The 2012 INDWE S.A. Senior Amateur Open Strokeplay Championship is a 54 hole event played in two divisions. The A division (up to handicaps of 9) play medal whilst the B division (handicaps 10 to 24) play individual stableford. The defending champion is Lawrence Franklin from Killarney CC who posted rounds of 73 72 76 (221) at Royal Cape / Rondebosch. Last year saw a record field of 270 players participate.
