Franklin takes INDWE Senior Amateur title

23 Oct 2011

INDWE SA Senior Amateur Open champion Lawrence Franklin

The INDWE SA Senior Amateur Open has come and gone with Lawrence Franklin from Killarney Country Club crowned the champion for 2011.

A titanic struggle ensued over the last nine on the final day between Franklin and Mowbray Golf Club’s Herman September.

Franklin was consistency personified with a string of 11 straight pars after the disastrous triple bogey eight at the par-five seventh.

September held the a three shot lead going into the final nine holes, but a birdie at the par-four 10th followed by bogeys at the 11th, 14th, 15th and 17th allowed Franklin to catch September at the end of regulation play.

Both players had recorded the same scores for each round - 73, 72 & 76 - to tie on five-over-par 221, but Lawrence parred the first extra hole in the ensuing play-off to seal the victory.

The tournament was played over the Royal Cape and Rondebosch courses from 19-21 October, with both venues presenting golf courses that were in truly outstanding condition.

The weather played along with a light early morning drizzle and a fresh north-wester wind blowing over the first two days and the final day at Royal Cape Golf Club saw the players tee off to great golfing conditions.

Peter van Coller from Strand and Frans Bruwer from Kleinmond took the first round lead with 71’s at Royal Cape saw. Bruwer set the course alight, turning in four under 32, but their challenges faded over the home stretch in round three. They both tied for 26th.

Franklin and September held the second round lead on 145, with Tim Hewan from Country Club Johannesburg closing in after a 71 at Rondebosch Golf Club. However, a disappointing final round 80 ended Hewan’s challenge and he finished in 14th spot.

East London Golf Club members Denis Jones and Norman Phillips both tied for third on 223, Julian Visser from Bellville, Rondebosch’s Jonathan Hobday and Francois Le Roux from De Zalze on 224. The 72-year-old Hobday shot a 71 for the low round of the day.

In the B-Division, Manual Branco from Westlake took the victory on a count-out after tying with Clive Norman from Rondebosch on 107 stableford points. Jean Kriel from Vredenburg placed third on 106.

Phillip Hollick from Mount Edgecombe recorded the only hole-in-one of the tournament at the par-three 14th at Rondebosch Golf Club .

The highlight of the national senior golfing calendar drew a bumper field of 273 with 208 players challenging in the A-Division and 65 in the B-Division.

The Western Province Senior Amateur will be played from 1-2 March 2012 at Steenberg Golf Club, followed by The Cape Winelands at De Zalze Golf Club from 4-5 March 2012. Both events historically draw a large contingent of up-country players.
