Cape Winelands Senior Amateur Open

12 Mar 2012

A spectacular chip-in for an eagle by Mark Hair at the short par 4 13th at De Zalze Golf Club enabled him to win the title at the Cape Winelands Senior Amateur Open. The course was in exceptional condition although the wind played havoc with the players on both tournament days.

After the first round Francois Le Roux led Mark Hair by 1 shot after recording a well compiled 70. Both players are members of De Zalze Golf Club and are stalwarts in the Western Province senior side. After 27 holes Francois led Mark by 3 shots but the final nine was a different story. Four holes into the final nine both players were tied but a steady final run-in by Mark ensured a well-earned victory, eventually winning by 2 strokes.

Mark returned scores of 71 & 73 whilst Francois Le Roux had 70 & 76 to finish in a tie for 2nd place with another De Zalze member, Tony Bailey. Tony was the only player in the field today to break par, recording a 71. His final tally was 146 – 75 & 71. His round was steadiness personified 3 birdies and dropped shots at the 14th (par5) and 16th (par 3).

This event was the final in the Western Cape swing with Jock Wellington winning the Boland leg and earlier in the week Paarl member, Jan Vorster, winning the Western Province leg at Steenberg.

Jock Wellington finished strongly today compiling a level par 72 for an overall score of 148 to finish 4th , whilst another Western Province player, Andrew Cleophas finished 5th on 150 after two 75’s.

The Western Cape swing has become a popular series of events with the tournaments being well attended and in fact over-subscribed.
