Van Heyningen sets the pace at Vaal de Grace

16 May 2012

While South Africa’s leading professional chase glory at the Volvo Match Play in Spain this week, amateur Charl van Heyningen hopes for success at the SA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play title, sponsored by Volvo, at Vaal de Grace.

The 38-year-old Irene golfer stormed to the lead with an opening four-under-par 68 at the Nick Price layout on the banks of the Vaal River.

Van Heynigen leads by two from former Sunshine Tour professionals Jaco Rall and Neil Homann and is three clear of fellow Irene Golf Club member, Louis Jonck, alone in fourth.

Top South African senior Jock Wellington from Kyalami Country Club is in the bus at even-par 72 alongside Free State and Northern Cape’s Josef Fourie while Graeme Watson, a two-time winner this season - PH Fuel Highveld Mid Amateur Open and Volvo Free State and Northern Cape Mid-Amateur Open - is five off the pace among those tied for 10th including Central Gauteng Mid-Amateur Open winner, Marius Lourens.
