Stephen Johnston wins another Mid-Amateur tournament

04 Apr 2011

Stephen Johnston of Roodepoort Country Club in Johannesburg lifted the 2011 Volvo Cars Highveld Mid-Amateur trophy to add to Central Gauteng Mid-Amateur Open that he won in October. This follows a rich vein of form which sees Johnston move to the top of the SAGA Mid-Amateur rankings after also finsihing in 16th position at the Volvo Cars Ekurhuleni Mid-Amateur Open which was played at State Mines in February.

Johnston, who has captained the Central Gauteng Mid-Amateur team for the past few years, played the Middelburg layout blind and his sublime 5 under par total of 139 (71 68) saw him edge ahead of his nearest competitor. Johnston was followed closely by Evan MacKenzie, of Ekurhuleni, who returned two rounds of 70. One shot further back were Hugo Delport and Neil Homann, two players that recently got chosen to represent the South African Mid-Amateur Test team to play Namibia in June. Homann held the 18 hole lead with a score of 68 but slipped to a second score of 73 in the afternoon which left the door open for other contenders and Johnston once again took full advantage.
