The first Mid Amateur Test Match between South Africa and Namibia ended in a comprehensive win for South Africa by 14 points to 4 on Tuesday. It was an historical occasion not so much for the win but for the fact that this was the start of exciting times for Mid Amateur golfers in South Africa.

“By providing players of 35 years of age or more the chance to play for their country should encourage our top amateurs to extend their competitive life, so to say, in the sport,” said Colin Burger, President of the South African Golf Association and also team manager for the winning test team.

According to Burger this is the start of what the South African Golf Association hope will be an annual event on its calendar.

The final day of the inaugural test match, over the Windhoek Country Club layout, was played in bitterly cold conditions created largely by the strong wind that prevailed.

South Africa won all their games barring one betterball match in the morning and one singles match in the afternoon. Lyall McNeil and Gerry Coetzee went one down to Thomas Shitaleni and Gerhard van der Merwe and Hugo Delport was comprehensively beaten by Douw van Wyk, 6 and 5.
