Reigning Volvo SA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play champion Greg Sheard claimed his second title in three months at the Pro Shop / Volvo KZN Mid-Amateur Open Stroke Play at Durban Country Club on Sunday.

The 39-year-old De Zalze golfer opened his campaign at the statuesque former SA Open venue with a three over 75 to tie for fourth alongside Stephen Johnson from Ruimsig and the pair lagged four shots behind first round leader Chris Froneman from Akasia Golf Club.

However, Sheard leapfrogged the frontrunners in the second round with three birdie, four bogey 74 and cemented his second place on the SA Mid-Amateur rankings with a two-stroke victory over Mount Edgecombe’s Dave Brown.

Sheard closed with a winning four-over-par 148, while local favourite Brown followed an opening 74 with a 76 to take sole second.

South Africa’s leading senior amateur, Francois le Roux from De Zalze, finished third 151 after rounds of 78 and 73.

Cedric Mngadi from Riverside Golf Club recorded 36 points in the first round and 28 in the second to win the B-Division by three points from Bloemfontein’s Alec Levin (28-33).
