KZN dominates at SA Mid-Amateur IPT

11 Oct 2011

Norman Raadt from Central Gauteng was key in their victory over Western Province

Just two rounds into the South African Mid-Amateur Interprovincial at Humewood Golf Club and KwaZulu-Natal and Central Gauteng has emerged as the strong contenders to take claim this year’s title.

KwaZulu-Natal handed the Western Province an 8-4 drumming on Monday and in today’s second round, the coastal side thrashed Mpumalanga by the same margin.

The two teams were at stalemate after the morning foursomes, but Simon Taylor, Murray Gilson, Sean Fenger, Gerry Coetzee, Elton James and David Brown ensured that KwaZulu-Natal completely dominated the singles. Only Johan van Staden and Eddie Daniel were able to put any points on Mpumalanga’s scorecard.

Central Gauteng, scored a comprehensive 8½  - 3½ victory over Boland on Monday, struggled in the early part of the foursomes and singles but still managed to get the better of Western Province.

“We were four down after the nine holes in all the foursomes and in this format it’s really hard to come back from that kind of deficit,” said Central Gauteng team manager Marinus Weiss. “We managed to break even and finish the morning at two all.

“Then, in the singles it was the same scenario. We were down in six matches through the front nine, but the guys dug deep and showed what they can do.”

Grant Wood, Norman Raad, David Muller and Stephen Johnson swung the momentum in Central’s favour while Lee Johnson, three down with five to play, managed to force a halve against Greg Sheard.

“Unfortunately Brett Langston and Kevin Sharp were on the losing end, but Steve Williams tidied up for us to give us a 7½ - 4½ victory,” said Weiss.

After a shocking loss to Mpumalanga on Monday, Ekurhuleni got their title defence back on track by beating Boland 6½ - 5½.

In the B-Section, Gauteng North drew six all with North West but beat Border 9½ - 2½, while Border struck back to beat North West 7-5.
