Homann holds on for SA Mid-Amateur lead

17 May 2012

Overnight leader Neil Homann extended his lead to two shots with a third round 70 in the SA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play, sponsored by Volvo, at Vaal de Grace.

Second round leader Neil Homann extended his slender one shot overnight lead to two shots in the third round of the SA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play, sponsored by Volvo at Vaal de Grace.

The 42-year-old former professional dropped three shots but picked up three birdies and an eagle-three at the par-five seventh for a two-under-par 70, taking his 54-hole total to five under 211.

“It wasn’t my best ball striking round but I kept it together nicely,” he said. “I had two very good putts for the birdie at the sixth and eagle at the seventh and made another good 12-footer at the last for birdie. But I dropped two shots with two putts from about 25 feet. I scrambled well, but it certainly wasn’t one of my best rounds. I’ll need to shoot a couple under par to finish in front.”

The Randpark golfer certainly will have his job cut out in Friday’s final round with the threesome riding his tail at three under 213.

Six off the pace at the start of the third round, Ekurhuleni’s Graeme Watson - already a two-time winner this season - carved out a bogey-free 66 to launch to a tie for second with Fourie. His flawless effort included five birdies in his opening loop and he added number six at the par-five 17th.

Former professional Josef Fourie from Jan Kemp Dorp Golf Club in the Free State dropped just one shot as he dipped to 69, the first time he went under par in the tournament, while State Mines golfer Jan Delport eagled the 17th to sign off with a two under 70.

Tyrol Auret from Ebotse finished three off the pace alone in fourth, while first round leader Charl van Heyningen slipped into fifth on 215 after both players came home in even-par 72.

A four-under-par 68 lifted Glendower’s Kevin Sharp to a share of seventh on 216 alongside former professional Jaco Rall from Ebotse, who carded a 71.
