Gerlou Wins Boland Mid-Amateur

10 Sep 2012

Gerlou Roux overcame poor weather and a final green three putt to win the 2012 Boland Volvo Mid-Amateur Championship when he beat Phillip Sanderson in a sudden-death playoff for the title.

Despite strong winds which blew for parts of the day and persistant rain which blew across the course in squalls, Gerlou posted two rounds of 70 (-2) over the tough Championhsip layout of the Langebaan Country Estate to get into a playoff with Phillip Sanderson who posted a best of the day 68 (-4) in the afternoon to end at 4 under par after he shot level par 72 in the morning.

Finishing on different sides of the course, each of the players who finished on -4 will have a story of what could have been as Phillip, finishing 15 minutes ahead of Gerlou had a chance to post a score of -5 when he stood on that score on his final tee (the 9th hole). Phillip could not par the difficult 9th and this opened the door for Gerlou who had birdied the 17th to put him in position to win with a birdie on the easier finishing hole, the par 5 18th.

Gerlou however three putted the final green for a par to end at -4. The players teed off on the 10th hole in a sudden death playoff which Gerlou won with a birdie 3 on the first playoff hole.

Evergreen Dirk vd Merwe posted rounds of 70 and 74 for a third place finish, three ahead of Josef Fourie and Steve Williams who stormed home in 32 shots on the back nine for a 69.

With the SAGA due to select the SA Mid-Amateur test team, Gerlou has to have given the selectors something to think about as he attempts to play both the Mid Amateur and "Open" tournaments around the country.
