Uitenhage golfer Attie Burger held of reigning Volvo SA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play champion Greg Sheard to claim a two shot victory in the Volvo Eastern Province Mid-Amateur at Humewood Golf Club in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

Arguably South Africa’s top links course, the 48-year-old Eastern Province player comfortably navigated the wide and undulating fairways, thick coastal bush and fast greens in rounds of 73 and 70 to win on one-under-par 143.

The key to Burger’s success was limiting his mistakes and righting his wrongs at the tough former SA Open layout.

In the first round, Burger bogeyed the second, signed for a seven at the par-five 11th and dropped another shot at the 13th, but he tied for second with fellow Uitenhage golfer Ryno Ferreira after birdies at the fifth, 15th and 16th.

The pair trailed first round leader, Hendrik Burger from Bloemfontein, by two strokes.

In the second round, Burger dropped shots on the first, 13th, and 15th, but erased the deficit with birdies at the fifth, eighth, 11th, 15th and 17th to set up his two shot victory.

Sheard, who opened with a 75, dropped three shots in the second round but reversed the damage with five birdies to finish alone in second after signing for a two under 70.

Meanwhile Ferreira added a second round 74 to tie for third on three-over-par 147 with local favourite Mzuyanda Zingela, who carded rounds of 77 and 70 at his home course.

Rounds of 75 and 73 lifted Stephen Johnston from Ruimsig Country Club in Central Gauteng to joint fifth on four over 148 alongside the country’s number one ranked mid-amateur, Graeme Watson. The Ekurhuleni golfer struggled to an opening 76, but recovered well with a second round even par 72.

Local player Christiaan Pienaar (72-77) tied for seventh with Neil Homann (78-71) from Wanderers, while fellow Humewood golfer David Konzani (74-79) finished joint 11th.
