Thriston, Tristen & James lead latest Junior Rankings

06 Jul 2012

Thriston Lawrence

The latest SAGA Junior Golf rankings, updated after the latest National Order of Merit event at Beachwood, shows two 15 year olds leading the pack.

After his recent victory at the NOoM Beachwood, Mpumalanga’s 15 year old Thriston Lawrence is ranked number 1 junior in South Africa. Thriston has put together great performances throughout the year with his winning of the SA Boys Matchplay being the top achievement. At the beginning of the year Thriston finished 3rd in the first NOoM played at Somerset West, then losing a play-off at Kempton Park at the inland NOoM and then winning this past week at Beachwood. This comes after a somewhat disappointing SA Boys U17 at Pretoria Country Club. Another fine achievement was the joint 5th finish in the SA Boys U19 Strokeplay held at Katberg. A player who has the confidence and ability to be one of a line of outstanding South African golfers.

In 2nd place on the rankings is another 15 year old, Gauteng North’s Tristen Strydom. A player with undoubted ability who has shown that he has great fighting qualities. Tristen is the SA Boys U19 Strokeplay Champion, winning the title at Katberg. The first NOoM at Somerset West saw him runner-up to Haydn Porteous. An indifferent start in the SA Boys U17 saw a good comeback to finish in 7th position and then this past week at Beachwood, after a final round 69, saw Tristen finish joint 12th. Tristen will be heading off soon to participate in the Duke of York as a result of winning the SA Boys title.

16 year old James du Preez from Gauteng North makes up the top 3. A renowned matchplay exponent, who was the MVP at the recent Challenge IPT, has proved that he is equally adept at the strokeplay version. A win at the NOoM in March at Pollak Park and a good 3rd place at Beachwood certainly were highlights. A below par performance at the tough Pretoria Country Club, SA Boys U17, saw James finishing joint 14th. A player who hits the ball a long way and who possesses a sound overall game.
