Triston Strydom won the SA Under 14 Boys amateur Stroke Play Championship that was decided at the beginning of April over the Schoeman Park Golf Club layout in Bloemfontein.

The 72 hole event was reduced to 54 holes due to excessive rain which made the course unplayable, the third round being cancelled.

One of the stars of this tournament was under 13 Karabo Mokoena from Maccauvlei Golf Club in Central Gauteng. The talented young golfer led the first round with a one under par 71. Triston Strydom, from Gauteng North, shot a two under par second round 70 to take the lead after 36 holes which never relinquished.

SA U13 Divisional Champion, Karabo MokoenaThe difficult conditions, created by a very wet playing surface, meant that a two over par 74 by Strydom was enough in the final round to win, two shots clear of Keegan de Lange, also of Gauteng North.

Mokoena went on to win the under 13 section, three shots clear of the next best player in the same category.

Junior amateur golf is busy going through a growth spurt, according to the SAGA’s Junior Golf Co-Ordinator, Johan Scholtz. “More than 109 players entered this event, more than double any event prior.”
