SAGA Junior Golf kicks off in 2012

The first National Order of Merit junior event for 2012 started today in warm and extremely gusty conditions at Somerset West Golf Club. A full field of 109 juniors are participating in this event.

Although the conditions were tough some good scores were posted in the morning session. Leading the field was Haydn Porteous on a 4 under par 68. Chasing Haydn was a threesome comprising Ian Snyman (Western Province), Jason Froneman (Ekurhuleni) and Thriston Lawrence (Mpumalanga), all on 2 under par 70. Triston Strydom (Gauteng North) was on 1 under par 71 with a group of 4 players bunched on level par 72, namely Elmo Barnard, Hando Brophy, Jade Buitendag and Jovan Rebula.

With the intensity of the wind increasing Haydn stretched his lead in the afternoon round by starting with a birdie, two pars, an eagle and another birdie after the first 5 holes - 4 under par after 5 holes – eventually completing his round in 2 under 70. He leads the tournament by 3 shots from Thriston Lawrence (71 in the afternoon) and Triston Strydom (70 in the afternoon) – both players are on 141. In 4th place on 143, 1 under par, is Elmo Barnard. The other players making up the top 10 are Ian Snyman (145), Jade Buitendag (145), Christiaan Bezuidenhout (146), Philip Kruse (146), Aslam Mallick (148), Jason Froneman (148), and Luke Trocado (148).
