SA U16 Boys ready to take on European stars

03 Aug 2011

Zander Lombard

Four top South African Under-16 junior golfers are ready to make their mark at the fifth Italian Individual Championship at Golf Club Biella at the end of August.

The South African Golf Union (SAGA) selected Zander Lombard of Gauteng North, Zander Gouws of Mpumalanga, as well as the Western Province’s Dylan Raubenheimer and Ian Snyman as those who will be flying the country’s flag at the 72-hole international stroke play championship from 30 August to 1 September.

“South Africa has participated in the Italian Under-16 Championship since its inception in 2007,” said SAGA coordinator of Junior Golf, Johan Scholtz. “This is the strongest team we could possibly send, as all four juniors are within the top four of the current SA Boys Under-16 Stroke Play Order of Merit.”

Scholtz added that three players will also be selected to challenge for the Nation’s Trophy, a team event that takes place concurrently with the first 36 holes of individual stroke play.

The Golf Club Biella, known locally as “La Betulle”, in the Valcarozza region is a highly respected venue. The par-73 championship layout winds through dense woods and is well bunkered to provide a stern test for the South Africans.
“We will be going up against some of the top golfers from Europe,” said Lombard, the current SA Boys Under-16 number one. “This is a great opportunity for us as individuals, as a team and as the representatives of South African junior golf. We are looking forward to the challenge and we are definitely going to do our best to bring the trophies home.”

Colin Burger, President of the SAGA and who will accompany the team, said the tournament is a great opportunity for the juniors to gain international experience.

“Anytime our players get the chance to challenge on international level, it is an opportunity for them to increase their competitive experience. We look forward to seeing how they measure up against the top players from Europe.”
