Preview of the SA Boys U17 Stroke Play Championship

11 Jun 2012

A record field of players will contest the NOMADS SA Boys U17 Stroke Play Championship starting on Monday the 25th June at the prestigious Pretoria Country Club.

All the country’s leading juniors in this particular age group will be participating, with the exception of Western Province’s Dylan Raubenheimer. Dylan will unfortunately only be arriving back in South Africa from Japan on the Sunday preceding the event.

The field includes the SA Boys U19 stroke play champion, Gauteng North’s Tristen Strydom, playing on his home course, as well as the SA Boys U19 match play champion, Mpumalanga’s Thriston Lawrence. Gauteng North’s Philip Kruse as well as Limpopo’s Jaco Linde, who finished 2nd and 4th respectively in the recent SA Boys U19 Stroke Play Championship, are also in the field. A player to watch, who has recently been in a rich vein of form, is Central Gauteng’s Darin de Smidt, the losing finalist in the SA Boys U19 match play.

This is certainly a star studded field with other possible champion contenders being, James du Preez (Gauteng North), Jason Froneman (Ekurhuleni), Zander Gous (Mpumalanga), Hennie du Plessis (Limpopo) and Gauteng North’s Keegan de Lange.

Besides the 132 players contesting the individual title, a total of 11 union sides have entered for the SA Boys U17 Team trophy. On paper the powerful Gauteng North side look formidable with all the players ranked in the top 20 in the country, namely James du Preez (2nd), Tristen Strydom (4th), Philip Kruse (9th), Keegan de Lange (10th), Rosswell Sinclair (12th) and Ruan Conradie (18th).

With the outstanding talent on show this tournament promises to deliver golf of an exceptionally high standard.
