NOMADS SA Boys U19 Matchplay

06 Apr 2012

The matchplay stage of the SA Boys U19 started today with the top 32 qualifiers from the strokeplay tournament participating. The players were greeted by near gale force conditions on occasions at the Katberg Eco Golf Estate but a high standard of golf was on display. The 1st round of the matchplay saw most of the seeded players go through except Limpopo’s Jaco Linde, who was seeded 4th, losing to Southern Cape’s Jack Duthie 6 & 4.

The last 16 saw some shocks with Tristen Strydom, the SA Boys strokeplay champion, losing to Limpopo’s Hennie du Plessis 4 &2. The next match in the last 16 saw Thriston Lawrence outlast Daniel Mantel to win on the 19th. Daniel was dormie 2 but a great birdie, birdie, birdie finish by Thriston, which included a chip in at the par three 18th , showed great fighting qualities. Kwazulu Natal’s Clayton Mansfield beat Jack Duthie 4 & 3 whilst his opponent for tomorrow, Robert Bougas beat Mario Burger (Limpopo) 2 & 1. In the other half of the draw Zander Gous (Mpumalanga) defeated the strokeplay runner-up, Philip Kruse, 2 up and Angus Ellis-Cole (Central Gauteng) defeated Kwazulu Natal’s Malcolm Mitchell 5 & 4. Gideon van der Vyver (Western Province) has been in ominous form winning his 1st round match against Paul Boshoff (Gauteng North) 7 & 6 then overpowering Hando Brophy (Eastern Province) in the afternoon 6 & 5. The final player in the last 8 is Central Gauteng’s Darin de Smidt who beat Keegan de Lange (Gauteng North) 2 & 1.

Tomorrow promises to be an interesting day at a course that is an exciting matchplay venue.
