Nomads SA Boys U15 Final Day

01 May 2012

Jovan Rebula receiving the trophy from Club Manager Wouter Geldenhuys

After the torrential rain experienced yesterday the final day of the 2012 NOMADS SA Boys U15 Strokeplay Championship at Somerset West Golf Club produced a perfect weather day.

This was evidenced by the scores posted by the players. Eric Wowor (Central Gauteng) recorded the tournament best score with a 2 under par 70, followed closely with 71’s by Ruben Coetzer (Kwazulu Natal), Dylan Jacobs (Boland) and Jacques Smith (Eastern Province).

Jovan Rebula maintained his 3rd lead to capture the prestigious title after a 74 to-day to finish on an overall score of 296 (8 over par). Jovan comes from a family rich in South African golfing folklore, being the nephew of no other than Ernie Els. This performance was just reward for a player who is totally committed and an exemplary advertisement for all that is good about junior golf.

Kyle McClatchie (Ekurhuleni) closed with a 75 to finish 3 shots behind on 299. The next three spots were filled by Gauteng North’s Rosswell Sinclair (300), Central Gauteng’s Marco Steyn (301) and Luca Filippi from Western Province on 302. This was a memorable tournament for Luca Filippi, who turned 13 less than a fortnight ago. Scores of 78, 76, 76 & 72 was a great effort by this youngster.

The team event proved extremely popular with the powerful Central Gauteng (1533) side winning by an emphatic 15 shots. Western Province (1548) were the silver medallists with Kwazulu Natal (1553) a further 5 shots back. A total of 14 provincial sides contested the team event.

The tournament proved that junior golf at under 15 level is very healthy which augurs well for the future of golf in South Africa.
