Zander Lombard with his trophy on conclusion of the 72 hole Nomads SA U16 Stroke Play Championship

Zander Lombard won the 72 hole Nomads South African Under 16 Stroke Play Championship by one shot from Angus Ellis-Cole. The three day tournament, played at Somerset West Golf Club in Western Cape, was played in cold wet conditions which were not conducive to low scoring.

The championship concluded on Wednesday (29 July 2011).

Lombard, who plays out of Woodhill Country Club in Gauteng North recorded a seven over par 72 hole total of 295.

The championship was played over three days. The first round saw Strand Golf Club’s Dylan Raubenheimer record a three under par first round score of 69 to take a comfortable three shot lead over Zander Gous (72).

However this was short lived. By the end of the second round Zander Lombard’s regulation round gave him a 36 hole aggregate of 148, four over par, and a one stroke lead over Ellis-Cole (74). Raubenheimer (81), over night leader, dropped to six over par at the half way stage.

The third round saw Lombard stretch his lead over Angus Ellis-Cole, of Roodepoort Country Club, to two shots. The Gauteng North golfer recording his second consecutive round of 72 which gave him a 54 hole aggregate of 220. Ellis-Cole had a one over par 73.

Best round of the third round went to Border’s Jade Buitendag. He recorded a four under par 68. He was thirteen over par for the championship going into the final round.

The start of Wednesday’s final round was delayed until 08h45 due overnight rain.

With the leaders being seeded, and teeing off last, it was a case of who could catch Lombard.

Ellis-Cole tried and got within one shot of the leader by the final hole. However he made heavy weather of it bogeying holes 2, 3, and 11. He birdied hole 12 and 15 to get eight over par for the championship.

Meanwhile Lombard was having his fair share of bogeys. He dropped a shot at hole 6, 9 and 11 to go to seven over par. A birdie at 12 was followed by a bogey at hole 16. The talented young Woodhill golfer had a three over par final round of 75.

With one shot in it and the pressure on, Ellis-Cole bogeyed the penultimate hole and closed with a birdie on 18. He finished with a final round of 74 and an eight over par 72 hole aggregate of 296.

Local golfer Dylan Raubenheimer (73) also got his championship aggregate to eight over par by hole 12. However bogeys on holes 13 and 14 put paid to any challenge he may have presented to the overnight leader down the final holes.

Raubenheimer, on thirteen over par 298, finished the leading player in the Under 15 category. He was followed, in the same age category, by Zander Gous (301) and Ruan Conradie (302).
