30 Jun 2011

Zander Lombard earlier in the year when he represented SAGA Juniors against Scotland and SA Golf Development Board

Zander Lombard from Woodhill Country Club, Gauteng North, leads the SA boys U16 Stroke Play Championship in Somerset going into the final round with 4 over par score of 220.

He established a 2 shot lead after an eagle on the par 5, 18th during his 3rd round. His nearest rivals on 222 are Angus Ellis Cole also from Woodhill Country Club and Zander Gouws from Piet Retief Golf Club in Mpumulanga. A further 2 shots back, on 224, is Jason Froneman from Kempton Park Golf Club, Ekurhuleni.

The first round leader, Dylan Raubenheimer, from Strand Golf Club in WP,  find himself 9 shots off the pace from.

The championship started in good weather after having 75 mm of rain in a 36 hour window late last week. After 27 holes on Tuesday the weather stayed fine even though the ground was heavy and wet underfoot but then the weather rolled in and conditions have been poor ever since.

The first day saw Dylan Raubenheimer open the scoring at 3 under 69. This gave him a 3 shot lead over his nearest rival Zander Gouws who was on level par.

The first nine holes the following morning saw major changes take place on the leaderboard with Raubenheimer went 7 over for the nine holes and this gave the entire field a chance to move into contention.

On Wednesday morning the players started in the rain and the playing conditions were extremely difficult with wind. This weather lasted just about the whole day. The TOC came very close to suspending play but the fortunately the weather lifted and all schdeuled play for the day was completed.

Zander Lombard made his move, after being 6 shots out the lead after a first round of 76. Players battled in the windy and wet conditions and Lombard played good golf to come in with a par 72 on day two, while the previous day’s leaders stumbled and moved down the leaderboard.

With another level par 72 in his 3rd round Zander Lombard consolidated his lead. He will tee off for the final round this morning and is the favourite to lift the trophy once play gets underway after an hour delay this morning.
