Goosen and IMG sponsor 2012 National High Schools Champs

21 Jan 2012

A staunch supporter of junior golf, Retief Goosen and IMG announced their sponsorship of the 2012 Retief Goosen National High School Championships, in association with IMG

The South African Golf Association is very proud to announce that Retief Goosen and his management company IMG have accepted the invitation to become the title sponsors for the South African National High Schools Championships in 2012.

The SA National High School Championships, which for the first time under the auspices of the SAGA took place in 2011 at Mount Edgecombe, will in future be known as the Retief Goosen National High School Championships, in association with IMG.

We are also proud to announce that both Vodacom and Goosen’s club and ball sponsor, TaylorMade, will also be coming on board as official partners to the event.

The partnership with Vodacom comes as an extension to this year’s Vodacom Origins of Golf Series, which will be in honour of Goosen and is dubbed as The Goose Chase.

During 2012, a qualifying round will be hosted by every golf union through either a championship day or league for the Retief Goosen National High School Championship. Each union will be invited to send two teams to the National Championship making up 28 high school teams to participate.

Goosen and IMG will also be supporting a school from a historically disadvantaged area, who will be invited to participate in the Retief Goosen National High School Championships.

The last team to participate will be the previous year’s winners, who will be invited to defend their title.

Each team is made up of four players and the best three stroke play scores of every round are calculated to make up the team’s total.

A total of 120 high school pupils are expected to participate at the Nationals in the 36-hole event over two days. The exact date and venue for the 2012 will be announced in due course.

“The SAGA has always maintained that growth in golf needs to happen through schools,” said SAGA second vice president and chairman of Junior Golf, Gerhard Conradie. “It is fantastic to know that Retief has seen the importance of this event and decided to support it.”

Robyn Cox, Managing Director, IMG South Africa said IMG, as one of the leading agencies in golf, are excited to be involved with this event.

“We are excited to be working with the SAGA in creating a platform for Schools Golf.  Recruiting rising stars is high on the agenda of the IMG Golf team and where better to find potential stars than in the junior ranks.”

Goosen, a two-time US Open winner, commented: “I am delighted to be associated with the National High School Championship programme and to support the young golfers of South Africa.

“I look forward to working with the SAGA and seeing the benefits this competition will add to golf development in our country.”
