Exciting playoff decides winner at National Order of Merit

08 Jan 2013

Jack Duthie, Thriston Lawrence & Jovan Rebula

The first NOMADS National Order of Merit event for 2013 was concluded today at Mowbray Golf Club with the result being decided by a three way playoff.

The event started yesterday in perfect golfing conditions with some superb scores being recorded. Jack Duthie (Knysna Golf Club) led with a 5 under par 67 followed by two players on 69, namely Thriston Lawrence and 15 year old Jovan Rebula. The afternoon round saw the wind pick up appreciably with the leaders being severely tested. Jack Duthie recorded a 74 to lead by 3 from Pretoria Country Club member James du Preez, 71 & 73. The afternoon session saw Xander Basson (Middelburg Country Club) have an outstanding 68.

The start of today’s final round, in good golfing conditions, saw both players, Jack and James, drop early shots to par. Jack dropped a shot at the par 4 1st, a double drop at the 3rd and then a drop shot at the 4th – 4 over par after 4 to eventually finish on 75. James played steady golf throughout to finish with a 74 – to finish 7th overall.

Two players came through the pack today, George Golf Club’s Jovan Rebula and Nelspruit Golf Club member Thriston Lawrence. Both were lying 4 shots behind the leader after 36 holes. In the end both recorded 71’s to force a play-off. The play-off lasted 1 hole with Thriston Lawrence recording a birdie to close out Jack and Jovan.

The most exciting round of the day was certainly Dainfern Country Club member David Meyers. He recorded 7 birdies, 3 drop shots and 2 costly 2 overs. The double drops were at the 2nd and the 18th – the final hole disaster resulted in David missing the play-off.

A highlight of the event was the hole-in-one recorded by Robert Raad (Wanderers Golf Club) in the 2nd round at the par 3 13th using a 5 iron.

The event was a great showcase of the young golfing talent in South Africa with 104 participants.
