Glenwood House 'A'

The Ernie Els SA Primary Schools Championship ended today at the scenic Oubaai Golf Club near George. A total of 19 primary schools participated in this prestigious event that was played in perfect golfing conditions. Although the Southern Cape has suffered of late with some heavy rain, the players were presented with a course in great condition.

The tournament format was 45 holes of strokeplay with teams of 4 having 3 scores counting for every 9 holes completed. The tournament was also divided into a Championship Division as well a Combined Schools Division. After the first day Glenwood House A (Southern Cape) held a slender 3 shot lead in the Championship Division to eventually win by a comfortable 15 shots. They were followed by the 2011 champions, Anton van Wouw (Gauteng North), with Kwazulu Natal’s Umhlanga College in 3rd place.

In the individual stakes Luke Mayo (Umhlanga College) was a comfortable winner recording an impressive 5 nines of 34,36,38, 37 & 35. A further 5 shots behind was Glenwood House A scholar Norman Seton after rounds of 38,35,40,37 & 35. Grey College’s Wilco Nienaber finished in 3rd place, a further 6 shots back.

The Combined Schools Division was a close run affair with 3 schools within shouting distance going into the final round. Mondeor / Glananda (Central Gauteng), Clifton / Umhlali (Kwazulu Natal) & Worcester Noord / Victoria Park (Boland) were all within 3 shots going into the final round. A strong finish by Boland’s Worcester Noord / Victoria Park saw them through by a slender 1 shot over Kwazulu Natal’s Clifton / Umhlali. The individual competition was comfortably won by Chandler Shaw (Mondeor / Glananda) by 5 shots with Jamie Josephs (Worcester Noord / Victoria Park) in 2nd place, after a count-out with Rigardt Albertse (Clifton / Umhlali).

The enthusiasm displayed by all the participating teams augurs well for an event in only in its second year.
