Ernie Els furthers his involvement in SA Golf

23 Aug 2011

Ernie Els is the patron sponsor of the SA Primary Schools Championship run by SAGA

The South African Golf Association (SAGA) will be hosting the South African Primary Schools Championships 2011, with South African golfing great Ernie Els as the patron for this year’s event. This tournament is an extension of the great work that is being done to bring the game of golf to the boys and girls of the junior age groups.

The SA Primary Schools Championship will be administered by the South African Golf Association (SAGA), and will involve 14 regional qualifiers held by golfing unions throughout South Africa. The winning teams from those unions will qualify for the Primary Schools Championship Finals to be held at the Ernie Els-designed course at Gardener Ross in Centurion in October. This
exciting new tournament is designed not only to provide an opportunity for primary school kids to compete on a national level, but also to provide a structured channel to focus the good work of golf players, parents, teachers and coaches in this primary schools segment of the sport.

Commented Els: “I am thrilled to help provide these young kids with an organized and competitive tournament where they can develop their skills and talents, but more importantly learn the benefits of a healthy, active and outdoor lifestyle. I believe that playing sport and interacting with each other is such an important part of growing up, especially in the fast-paced world we live in today.”

Ernie’s first formal involvement in developing young golfers started with his golfing foundation that began in 1999 with the purpose of providing talented, young golfers with educational assistance and playing opportunities to develop them through their teenage years. The Foundation joined forces with the world-renowned Fancourt Hotel and Golf Estate in 2006 to become the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation. The hard work being done at the Foundation has borne fruit with some brilliant successes
in recent times, including EFFF graduates Louis Oosthuizen winning The Open in 2010, James Kamte winning on the Asian Tour in 2010, as well as our current members Dylan Raubenheimer and Ian Snyman being selected for the South African u16 team that will tour Italy later this year.
