The 2012 SA Junior IPT Eastern Province Team

Eastern Province caused the first A-Section upset at the South African Junior Interprovincial when they managed to derail the Western Province Express at Paarl Golf Club this morning.

After their 9-3 loss to Central Gauteng on Monday, the Western Province expected a tough challenge from the Eastern Province, but the defending champions were outclassed in a closely fought battle.

Although Luke Trocado and Aslam Mallick claimed the first match for the defending champions 3&2, Alwyn Griebenow and Michael Maybery hit back and beat Meyer Pauw and Sean Bradley 2&1 to level to score.

Ronald Baxter and Hando Brophy put EP ahead with a 4&2 victory over Robert Bougas and Daniel Mantel. Granwell Gelderbloem and JG Smith combined well for a half point in the final match, giving EP a 2.5 - 1.5 edge going into the singles this afternoon.

In the other A-Section matches, Gauteng North also gained a 2.5 - 1.5 lead over KwaZulu-Natal while the battle between Ekurhuleni and Central Gauteng ended in a two-all draw.

Meanwhile Mpumalanga threw down the gauntlet with two solid victories in their second round foursomes matches against Border and North West in the B-Section.

Marco das Neves and Lonene Khoza, in the first match out, combined to draw first blood for the team by beating North West 3&1 and Border 4&3.

Building on the running start, Xander Basson and Albert Venter forced a 1-up victory over North West and managed to halve their match against  Border.

The final pairing of Zander Gous and Thriston Lawrence signed off on two more points with a 2-up victory over Border and a 3&2 win over North West.

“We are thrilled with how the players performed this morning,” said team manager Heidi Lawrence. “Although we beat Southern Cape on Monday, the loss against Boland stung and the players are determined to gain two victories today. Leading the foursomes will give them a confidence boost ahead of the singles.”

North West did gain the upper hand in their match against North West to take a 2.5 - 1.5 lead into the singles.

After a solid first round performance on Monday, Boland tops the B-Section log with four points and will be looking to convert a 2.5 - 1.5 foursomes lead over Limpopo into two more points this afternoon.
